The math behind the report

  • Daily calories: resting energy requirement RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75 (NRC 2006; Merck Veterinary Manual), multiplied by a published life-stage/activity factor (Merck MER table; AAHA 2021). Weight-loss plans start at 1.0×RER at ideal weight, estimated from body-condition score (Laflamme 1997 — escalating above BCS 7).
  • Condition screens run on the energy basis — grams per 1,000 kcal — because dry-matter percentages understate nutrient load in calorie-dense foods. Pancreatitis: fat ≤20 g/1,000 kcal (Merck; Shmalberg 2016). Kidney IRIS Stage 1: phosphorus <1.5 g/1,000 kcal (Cline, Today's Veterinary Practice; IRIS 2026). Weight loss: calorie density ≤3,400 kcal/kg with a ≥75 g protein/1,000 kcal preference (German 2015; Weber 2007).
  • The honesty margin: guaranteed analysis discloses minimum fat and phosphorus — actual values run higher. So "pass" requires headroom below each ceiling, foods at the ceiling are labeled borderline — confirm with the manufacturer, and a food that doesn't disclose the critical nutrient at all is excluded from that condition's recommendations, full stop. Where a manufacturer publishes a typical analysis, we use it directly and say so — WSAVA says every company should provide one on request, and refusal is a red flag.
  • Joint support follows the evidence: EPA/DHA (marine omega-3) carries the osteoarthritis literature; glucosamine gets zero ranking weight (Barbeau-Grégoire 2022 meta-analysis found no efficacy).
  • Cost: cost per day = your dog's calorie target × each food's cost per 1,000 kcal, from live-refreshed prices — the same math as our cost calculator.
  • Why we don't recommend by breed: breed here only fills in a starting weight and personalizes the wording — it never drives the food picks. Calorie needs come from your dog's actual weight (better than a breed-average guess), and a breed's disease predisposition is a statistical risk, not a diagnosis. Restricting a healthy dog's diet because its breed tends toward a condition is the kind of unfounded call we won't make — we act on what your vet actually diagnosed, which is why conditions are their own question above.

When we refuse to make a report

Some dogs need a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, not label math. If the intake shows heart disease, diabetes, late-stage kidney disease, liver disease, three or more medications, a puppy with a medical condition, or multiple interacting conditions, the tool tells you that and points you to the ACVN directory instead of producing a report. A recommendation we can't stand behind is worse than no recommendation.
