Wet Cat Food

877 wet labels verified · 410 priced · median 7.6% carbohydrate, dry matter

Wet cat food runs about 7.6% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis. Dry cat food runs about 30.2%. That is the single biggest difference between the two forms, it is computed from 877 and 343 verified labels rather than asserted, and it matters more for a cat than the equivalent gap does for a dog — a cat is an obligate carnivore with no dietary requirement for carbohydrate at all.

The two forms, once the water is out

A guaranteed analysis states everything as fed, so a can at 10% protein and a kibble at 40% are on different scales until moisture is removed. These medians are all on a dry-matter basis.

Kibble needs starch to extrude and hold its shape, which is why the carbohydrate gap exists at all — it is a manufacturing constraint, not a nutritional choice. That is worth knowing before reading any “grain-free” claim on a dry cat food: removing grain does not remove the starch requirement, it changes which starch is used.

What we will not tell you it does

That it prevents urinary disease. The mechanism people have in mind is real — more water in means more dilute urine — and vets do commonly recommend wet food for cats with a urinary history. But urinary disease is a veterinary diagnosis, food is maintenance rather than treatment, and straining or an inability to urinate is an emergency, especially in male cats.

The one urinary-relevant number a label can actually be checked on is magnesium, and it is disclosed on 82 of these 877 wet cat foods. Our urinary page ranks only foods that disclose it and pass, which is why it is shorter than everyone else’s.

Frequently asked

Is wet food better for cats than dry?

For a cat the case is stronger than for a dog. Cats are obligate carnivores with a weak thirst drive that evolved taking most of their water from prey. Wet food runs about 7.6% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis against roughly 30.2% for dry, and 53.3% protein against 39.6%. That is a real difference, not a marketing one. It still does not make dry food harmful for a healthy, well-hydrated cat.

How much more does wet cat food cost?

About 8.2x per 1,000 kcal — a median of $21.70 against $2.65 for dry, across 410 priced wet cat foods. That is a wider gap than the same comparison in dog food, because cat cans are small and sold by the case.

Does wet food prevent urinary problems?

We will not claim that. Higher water intake produces more dilute urine, which is the mechanism people have in mind, and vets commonly recommend wet food for cats with a urinary history. But urinary disease is a veterinary diagnosis and food is not a treatment. Magnesium is the one urinary-relevant figure a label can be checked on, and it is disclosed on only 82 of these 877 wet cat foods.

Can I feed a mix of wet and dry?

Yes, and most owners do. It moves cost per calorie proportionally rather than all the way, and it gets water into a cat that will not drink much. Feed both to a measured total calorie target rather than free-feeding one alongside the other.
