That is 161 dog foods (14.5% of the dog corpus) and 48 cat foods (3.9% of the cat corpus), which makes it substantially more a dog-food ingredient than most discussion admits. Nobody publishes that split because computing it means reading every label.
What it is, and why it is in the food
A joint supplement usually combined with glucosamine. The same 2022 meta-analysis (Barbeau-Grégoire et al.) that examined glucosamine reported a marked non-effect of chondroitin-glucosamine nutraceuticals for osteoarthritis pain and advised against relying on them for canine and feline joint pain. Safe to feed, but benefit is not supported by the current evidence.
The evidence is limited. Much of what is written about this ingredient online is extrapolated from other species, other doses, or nothing at all.

What we don’t know
Our figure counts what manufacturers print. An ingredient that arrives inside another component — a preservative already in the fish meal, say — does not have to be declared separately by the pet-food maker, so a count from labels is a floor, not a ceiling. We also cannot see inclusion rate: a label tells you chondroitin sulfate is present and roughly where it sits by weight, never how much.
The gap here is dose. Functional additives are studied at specific doses, and a guaranteed analysis rarely states the amount included — so it is usually impossible to tell whether a food contains a researched dose or a marketing sprinkle. We do not translate any of this into a score. There is no honest way to weigh one ingredient against a food’s AAFCO substantiation, its recall history and its cost, and sites that do it anyway are making the weighting up.
