The review we follow puts dog protein bands at 4.5 g (AAFCO minimum), 6 to 7 g (moderate) and over 9 g (high) per 100 calories.

Senior dog food questions
At what age is a dog a senior?
There is no single age. The 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's expected lifespan, so a giant breed gets there years before a small one.
Do senior dogs need less protein?
Healthy senior dogs do not. A 2021 veterinary review (Churchill and Eirmann) says healthy seniors do not benefit from protein restriction, may be harmed by it, and may need about 50% more protein than younger adults. Dogs with kidney or liver disease are different; ask your vet.
Do senior dogs need fewer calories?
Usually. The same review reports that a dog's daily energy needs fall about 25% with age. That is why a food with more protein per calorie helps: your dog eats less food but still gets its protein.
Is "senior" dog food regulated?
No. AAFCO sets nutrient profiles for growth, reproduction and adult maintenance only. A Tufts study of nearly 40 senior dog foods found calories from 246 to 408 per cup and protein from 4.8 to 13.1 g per 100 calories. The word on the bag tells you little; the numbers do.
Does my senior dog need glucosamine?
It is optional. Veterinary joint diets combine omega-3s (EPA and DHA) with glucosamine and chondroitin. The amounts in everyday foods are lower than in those diets. If your dog has arthritis, ask your vet about a joint diet or supplement.
Should I avoid grain-free food for my senior dog?
We leave grain-free foods out of our pick. In 2018 the FDA began looking into reports of a heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating many grain-free foods high in peas, lentils or potatoes. Its page was last updated in December 2022.
