Dasuquin vs Cosequin for dogs: which should you buy?

Buy Cosequin. Its soft chew has the same 600 mg of glucosamine and 400 mg of MSM as a small/medium Dasuquin with MSM chew, and it costs $0.33 a day for a 45 lb dog against $0.60 for Dasuquin (44% less, Amazon prices on October 19, 2026).

  • Same core amounts. Each Cosequin soft chew and each small/medium Dasuquin with MSM chew has 600 mg glucosamine and 400 mg MSM. Cosequin has 300 mg chondroitin; Dasuquin has 250 mg.
  • Lower cost, same schedule. Both labels give the same number of chews by weight up to 59 lb, so the price per chew decides it: $0.33 vs $0.60.
  • Same maker, same branded raw materials. Both come from Nutramax and use the same FCHG49 glucosamine and TRH122 chondroitin.

Buy Dasuquin with MSM instead if your vet asked for ASU (it adds 45 mg ASU, 20 mg boswellia and 16 mg green tea extract per small/medium chew), or for a dog over 60 lb who should get one large chew a day.

From the "Directions for Use" on Cosequin's soft chew page, Cosequin's tablet page and Dasuquin's soft chew page. Dogs under 10 lb: Cosequin sells a small-dog chew (260 mg glucosamine) and Dasuquin points to its tablets. Follow your vet's dose if it differs.

Dasuquin with MSM soft chews also list fish oil, glycerin, lecithin and mixed tocopherols among other ingredients. We could not find Cosequin's full inactive list on its site. Amazon also sells a 250-count Cosequin tablet listing titled "MSM+HA"; its title names an ingredient (HA) that Cosequin's label does not list, so we do not link it.

Maker, seal and recalls

Same company, no NASC seal, no FDA recall found

  • Maker. Both are sold by Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc., 946 Quality Drive, Lancaster, South Carolina (footer of cosequin.com and dasuquin.com). Nutramax says both are made in the United States with ingredients sourced worldwide, and that it runs more than 80 quality checks on each batch.
  • NASC Quality Seal. The National Animal Supplement Council lets only member companies that pass its audit show the seal (NASC seal page). NASC's member list, checked October 8, 2026, goes from Nulo to Nutri-Pet Research with no Nutramax, and neither brand's product pages mention NASC. So neither product has a seal we could check. That says nothing either way about quality.
  • Recalls. We found no Nutramax, Cosequin or Dasuquin entry in the FDA's animal and veterinary recall list or in the FDA recall records this site keeps from 2019 on.
  • "#1 vet recommended." Both brands print this. The footnotes cite a survey of small-animal vets with no date, sponsor or sample size, so we do not treat it as a fact.
NASC member list: the N section runs NOW Foods, Nulo, Nutri-Pet Research, Nutri-Vet, with no Nutramax
NASC member list, N section (October 8, 2026). Nutramax would sit between Nulo and Nutri-Pet Research.

Who should buy which

Questions owners ask

Is Dasuquin better than Cosequin?

Dasuquin has more ingredients, not more of the core ones. Per small/medium soft chew, both have 600 mg glucosamine and 400 mg MSM. Cosequin has 300 mg chondroitin and Dasuquin 250 mg. Dasuquin adds 45 mg ASU (avocado/soybean unsaponifiables), 20 mg boswellia extract and 16 mg green tea extract. No label shows that one works better for a given dog; ask your vet whether the extra ingredients matter for yours.

How much more does Dasuquin cost per day?

With Amazon prices on October 19, 2026, after the first 4 to 6 weeks: a 20 lb dog costs $0.17 a day on Cosequin soft chews and $0.30 on Dasuquin; a 45 lb dog $0.33 and $0.60; a 75 lb dog $0.33-$0.67 and $0.57. The first 4 to 6 weeks cost about twice as much, because both labels start with a higher dose.

What is the difference between Cosequin and Cosequin DS?

DS was the older name for the maximum-strength Cosequin tablet. Cosequin's site now sells "Chewable Tablets with MSM": 600 mg glucosamine, 300 mg chondroitin, 250 mg MSM and 3 mg manganese per tablet. Amazon still sells a Cosequin tablet without MSM, but Cosequin's site no longer lists it, so we could not check its label.

What is the difference between Dasuquin and Dasuquin Advanced?

Dasuquin Advanced keeps the glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and ASU of Dasuquin with MSM. It adds a 70 mg blend (140 mg in the large chew) of boswellia, turmeric extract, green tea extract and alpha-lipoic acid, plus omega-3s. Dasuquin's site marks it as sold through vets, and Amazon.com did not sell it when we checked.

Do Dasuquin or Cosequin have the NASC Quality Seal?

Not that we could find. NASC's member list, checked October 8, 2026, does not include Nutramax, and only members may use the seal. Neither brand's product pages mention NASC. This is not a test result; it means the seal is not there to check.

Is Dasuquin vs Cosequin for cats the same answer?

Not necessarily. Both brands sell separate cat products with different amounts and doses. This page covers the dog products only.
