- Protein and fat in the usual range. 25% to 30% minimum protein and 16% to 18% minimum fat (8% for Healthy Weight), on the label's as-fed basis.
- Low cost. $0.86 to $1.17 a day for a 50 lb dog across the formulas we priced, against $1.51 for Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach.
What some owners do not like: corn protein meal, whole grain corn and chicken by-product meal are among the first five ingredients of most formulas, and there is no grain-free Purina ONE dry food. If you want those out, Purina ONE is not the food for you.

Purina's new labels list dietary fiber; older labels and Pro Plan's list crude fiber, a smaller measure, so the two cannot be compared. A 50 lb dog is the top of Purina's 36-50 lb row, so we use the top of each range. Healthy Weight's chart also has a lower "weight loss" column; we use the regular one. Small Bites and Whole Body Support were not priced because we did not match a large bag on Amazon. Two older Purina ONE labels Purina still posts, Large Breed Adult Formula and Vibrant Maturity Adult 7+ Formula, say "formulated to meet" AAFCO profiles instead of feeding tests; we found no newer label for them.

Is Purina ONE a good dog food?
By label facts, yes. All 8 current Purina ONE adult dry labels we read carry AAFCO's feeding-test statement for adult maintenance, the stronger of the two kinds. Minimum protein is 25% to 30%. Its first ingredients include corn protein meal and chicken by-product meal, which some owners prefer to avoid; that is a preference, not a safety issue.
Is Purina ONE better than Pro Plan?
Not on the label basics, which are close. Purina ONE Chicken & Rice and Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice both promise 26% protein and 16% fat and both cite AAFCO feeding tests. Pro Plan packs more calories per cup (449 vs 383), so you feed less of it, but it still costs more: $1.51 a day for a 50 lb dog against $0.86.
Has Purina ONE been recalled?
We found no FDA recall of Purina ONE dry dog food in FDA's online records or in the FDA recall records this site keeps from 2019 on. In 2013 one lot of Purina ONE beyOnd White Meat Chicken & Whole Barley was recalled for Salmonella (reported by Food Safety News; we could not find FDA's page). In 2022 some Purina ONE True Instinct wet food was packed in cans labeled as a Pro Plan Veterinary Diets food; those cans were recalled.
Is Purina ONE grain free?
No. Every Purina ONE dry dog food label we read lists grains such as rice, corn or wheat, including True Instinct.
How much Purina ONE should I feed a 50 lb dog?
Purina's chart for Chicken & Rice says 2⅓ to 2¾ cups a day for a 36 to 50 lb adult dog. Other Purina ONE adult formulas range from 2¼ to 3½ cups for that weight because calories per cup differ. Use the chart on your bag and adjust to keep your dog at a healthy weight.
Why does the fiber look so high on the new Purina ONE bags?
Purina's new labels list dietary fiber (10.5% to 15.5% on Purina ONE), not crude fiber. Dietary fiber counts more kinds of fiber, so it is usually a bigger number. It cannot be compared with the crude fiber on older bags or on Pro Plan's label (4%).
