Which dog food brands meet WSAVA guidelines?

Of the 33 dog food brands we track, 1 (Hill's Science Diet) answers yes to all five of WSAVA’s manufacturer questions in public sources we could check, and 9 more answer yes to four, as of September 29, 2026.

Yes to all five WSAVA questions

Hill's Science Diet

  • ✓ Nutritionist on staff
  • ✓ Quality-control testing
  • ✓ Published research
  • ✓ Makes its own food
  • ✓ Feeding trials
Dry: check price →

Adult Chicken & Barley Recipe Dog Food, 15 lb bag. $2.08 per 1,000 kcal (Amazon price recorded October 19, 2026).

Wet: check price →

Adult Salmon & Barley Entrée Dog Food. $10.00 per 1,000 kcal (Amazon price recorded October 19, 2026).

Both labels say “Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate” complete and balanced nutrition for adult dogs. Why these: each is the lowest cost per 1,000 kcal Hill's Science Diet adult dog food in its form with a feeding-trial label and an Amazon listing we matched to it. Today’s Amazon price may differ. We earn a commission if you buy; it does not change the answers on this page.

WSAVA does not approve or list brands. It gives owners questions to ask a food company. This page shows each brand’s answers, with sources.

9 brands answer yes to four

Each of these misses one question. The card says which one and why. A miss is often a gap in what the company publishes, not proof of a problem.

What WSAVA asks

The five questions, in WSAVA’s words

These come from the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee’s Guidelines on Selecting Pet Foods (updated 10 March 2021, fetched September 29, 2026). The guide has four questions about the brand and four about the label. We use the ones a public source can answer yes or no. WSAVA’s second brand question (“Who formulates the diet?”) asks for names, so we fold it into the nutritionist question. The guide ends: “If the manufacturer cannot or will not provide any of this information, veterinarians and owners should be cautious about feeding that brand.”

  1. 1. Nutritionist on staff

“Do they employ a Nutritionist? Appropriate qualifications are either a PhD in Animal Nutrition or Board Certification by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN) or the European College of Veterinary Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN).”
WSAVA, What to look for in a brand, question 1

What counts as yes here: A public source names staff with a PhD in animal nutrition or ACVN/ECVCN board certification.

  2. 2. Quality-control testing

“What is the quality control process for ingredients and finished products?”
WSAVA, What to look for in a brand, question 3

What counts as yes here: The company publicly describes testing its ingredients or its finished food (for example, germ or toxin tests on every batch). General words like "high standards" do not count.

  3. 3. Published research

“What kind of product research or nutrition studies have been conducted? Is it published in peer-reviewed journals?”
WSAVA, What to look for in a brand, question 4

What counts as yes here: PubMed lists at least one dog or cat paper by someone working at the company that makes the brand today: its own pet-food company, or the company that owns it now. We search the full company name (for example “Champion Petfoods” for ORIJEN and ACANA, “Nestlé Purina” for Purina brands, “Waltham” for Mars brands), never the bare brand name, and we check each paper’s author address. Past owners, “present address” notes and look-alike names do not count.

  4. 4. Makes its own food

“Who makes the food? Companies may make their own food (i.e.,"Made by") or use a third- party manufacturer (i.e.,"Made for" or "Distributed by").”
WSAVA, What to look for on a label, question 4

What counts as yes here: A source shows the company owns and runs the plants that make its food.

  5. 5. Feeding trials

“The label might also specify if this was determined via life stage feeding trials vs formulation to meet requirements.”
WSAVA, What to look for on a label, question 1

What counts as yes here: At least one of the brand’s labels in our data carries the AAFCO “animal feeding tests” statement. A company saying it runs trials, with no label that shows one, is marked “claims trials, no label shows one” and does not count as yes.

WSAVA’s committee says it “does not endorse, approve, recommend or support specific products or companies” (WSAVA). Its own page lists Hill’s Pet Nutrition, The Purina Institute and Royal Canin as supporters of the committee (WSAVA). WSAVA does not say co-packing is wrong or that formulated foods are unsafe. Read more on why we don’t hand out checkmarks.

No feeding-trial AAFCO statement found on the 70 labels we’ve verified for this brand, and no company-wide claim was found either. Most pet foods are only "formulated to meet" AAFCO profiles (a paper calculation) rather than fed to real animals in trials — this is common, not necessarily a red flag.

Common questions

WSAVA and dog food brands

Is there a list of WSAVA approved dog foods?

No. WSAVA’s Global Nutrition Committee says it “does not endorse, approve, recommend or support specific products or companies.” It publishes questions to ask a pet food company. Any list of “WSAVA approved” brands is someone’s own reading of those questions, including this one.

A brand can make excellent food and still miss one of these; the table shows which question each brand misses and why.

Is Purina Pro Plan WSAVA compliant?

Purina Pro Plan answers yes to four of the five questions in public sources: a qualified nutritionist, its own plants, published research, and feeding-trial statements on most of its labels in our data. We could not check its quality-control answer: purina.com and Purina’s other sites blocked every automated check we tried on September 29, 2026 (two rounds, several tools), and Purina’s press releases we could read describe quality only in general words. That is a gap in our check, not a “no.”

Does Royal Canin do AAFCO feeding trials?

Not on the labels we hold. We re-checked all 113 Royal Canin dog food pages in our data by hand on September 29, 2026. Every one says “formulated to meet” the AAFCO nutrient profiles, and none says “animal feeding tests.” Royal Canin’s own answer to WSAVA’s feeding-trial question says most formulas meet AAFCO profiles “and/or feeding trials,” without saying which.

Does a “no” mean the food is bad?

No. WSAVA does not say a food fails if it uses a co-packer or is formulated rather than feeding-trial tested. A “not found” only means we could not find a public answer. WSAVA’s advice is to ask the company, and to be cautious if it cannot or will not answer.
