Legume load
"Grain-free" tells you what a food leaves out. It tells you nothing about what replaced the grain, which is the part the FDA's open inquiry into diet-associated canine dilated cardiomyopathy actually concerns. So we count: legume load is the number of distinct legumes — peas, lentils, chickpeas, beans and their protein and fibre fractions — appearing in the first ten ingredients. 443 of the 2,186 foods we can score (20%) carry two or more.
Why a count rather than a yes/no
Because ingredient splitting makes a yes/no meaningless. A recipe can list peas, pea protein, pea starch and pea fibre as four separate entries, each individually further down the list than a single combined "peas" would have been. Counting the distinct legume entries near the top captures what splitting is designed to obscure.
It is a proxy, and we say so. What actually matters is inclusion rate, and inclusion rate is never printed. Position by weight is the best available stand-in and it is not the same thing.
What the FDA inquiry does and does not say
The investigation began in 2018 after reports of DCM in breeds without a genetic predisposition, in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other pulses. A taurine-deficiency mechanism was one hypothesis, but many affected dogs had normal taurine, so it does not explain most cases.
As of the FDA’s most recent public update the association remains unproven, no causal relationship has been established, and no recall has been issued. We report legume load as a fact about the label, not as a hazard rating, and a dog with a suspected heart problem is a matter for a vet rather than an ingredient list.
The counter-intuitive part
Price is not a proxy for a lower legume load. Some of the most expensive grain-free foods in this corpus are the most legume-heavy, because premium grain-free formulation leans on pulses for both protein and structure.
